Common scams targeting newcomers - and what to do

Scammers deliberately target people new to the UK. The most common tricks: fake Home Office or UKVI phone calls claiming there is a problem with your visa and demanding immediate payment; fake HMRC texts about tax refunds or arrest; rental scams asking for deposits on flats you have never viewed; fake job offers that require an upfront fee; and visa agents promising guaranteed results. Remember: the Home Office, HMRC, police and banks never demand payment by phone, never ask for gift cards or cryptocurrency, and never threaten immediate arrest. If a call frightens you, hang up and check independently using official numbers. Never share your bank details, passwords or eVisa share codes with strangers. Report scams to Action Fraud (actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040), forward scam texts free to 7726, and tell your bank immediately if you paid - fast action can recover money.
