How do I get a National Insurance number?

A National Insurance (NI) number makes sure your tax and National Insurance contributions are recorded against your name. You need one to work, claim certain benefits or apply for a student loan. Some visa holders already have an NI number printed in their visa documents or linked to their immigration record - check first. If you do not have one, apply free online at GOV.UK; you may be asked to prove your identity with your passport and sometimes attend an appointment. You can start work before the number arrives, as long as you can prove your right to work; tell your employer the number later. Your NI number appears on payslips and HMRC letters - keep it private, but note it is not proof of right to work.
