How do I open a UK bank account as a newcomer?
You will need a UK account to receive wages and pay bills. High-street banks usually ask for two things: proof of identity (your passport, plus your eVisa share code if asked) and proof of UK address, such as a tenancy agreement, university letter or employer letter. Proof of address is the hardest part for newcomers, so app-based banks such as Monzo, Starling or Revolut are often the fastest route - they verify you by video or selfie and post a card to any address you can receive mail at. Once you have that account, its statements become proof of address for other services. If a bank refuses you a standard account, ask about a fee-free basic bank account, which most large banks must offer. Never let anyone else use your account: money mule activity is a crime and destroys your banking record.
