How do I register with a GP (family doctor)?

A GP (general practitioner) is your family doctor and the entry point to most NHS care, so register as soon as you arrive - do not wait until you are ill. Registration is free. Find a GP surgery near your home on the NHS website, then register online or by filling in a form at the surgery. You do not need proof of address, proof of identity or proof of immigration status to register: a surgery may ask for documents, but it cannot refuse you just because you do not have them. Everyone in England can register, whatever their visa situation. Once registered you can book appointments, get prescriptions and be referred to hospital specialists.
