Minimum wage and your payslip rights

Almost every worker in the UK is legally entitled to at least the minimum wage, whatever their visa type, contract type or nationality. Workers aged 21 and over get the higher National Living Wage; younger workers and apprentices have lower rates. The rates increase every April, so check the current figures on GOV.UK rather than relying on old numbers. You also have the legal right to a payslip every payday showing your gross pay, deductions (tax, National Insurance) and net pay - keep them all, as they are proof of income for renting, credit and visa applications. Warning signs of exploitation: being paid cash with no payslip, unexplained deductions for uniforms or accommodation that push pay below the minimum, or an employer holding your passport.
