Open your first UK bank account
From "no history, no address proof" to a working account — often in one day.
- 1
Start with a digital bank
Digital banks (Monzo, Starling, Revolut) were built for exactly your situation: they verify you with a passport scan and a selfie video, not utility bills you don't have yet. Download one app, have your passport ready, and a full UK account with sort code and account number usually arrives the same day. High-street banks can come later, once you have address history.
PreparePassport (or eVisa), a UK phone number and a UK address to register.
Watch outApps that promise "UK accounts for foreigners" for a fee — the real banks above are free; anyone charging is reselling or scamming.
This one is serious — get real helpThis step involves a high-risk area (legal, immigration, medical or benefits). We won't advise you here. Ask MyLife AI to prepare, or contact an official or appropriately regulated service before you act.
- Step 2
Learn the two numbers that run your money
UK banking runs on a sort code (6 digits, identifies the bank) and account number (8 digits, identifies you). Employers, landlords and HMRC will ask for this pair constantly — save it in your notes. Payments between UK banks are instant and free via Faster Payments; nobody writes cheques anymore and card-to-card transfers aren't a thing here.
PrepareYour new account's details from the app.
Watch outConfusing the card number with the account number — rent and salary go to sort code + account number, never your 16-digit card number.
- Step 3
Set up cheap transfers home
Sending money to Turkey through your bank's standard international transfer usually means poor exchange rates and hidden fees. Specialist services (Wise and similar) show the real exchange rate and exact fee before you send. Compare the "amount that arrives" — not the fee — across two services once, then stick with the winner. Over a year of family transfers, this is real money.
PrepareRecipient's Turkish IBAN and your ID for the transfer service's verification.
Watch out"Zero fee" adverts hiding the margin in the exchange rate — always compare what actually lands in the Turkish account.
- Step 4
Turn on every security feature
Five minutes in the app's security settings: enable app lock with biometrics, turn on notifications for every transaction, set your card's online/contactless limits, and learn where the freeze-card button lives. UK banks refund genuine fraud, but the refund fight is easier when instant notifications prove you reported it immediately.
PrepareJust the banking app.
Watch out"Safe account" phone calls claiming your money is at risk and must be moved — that is THE classic UK bank scam; banks never ask you to move money.
- Step 5
Add the second account (backup + budgeting)
Once the first account works, open a second at a different bank. Cards get frozen by fraud systems at the worst moments — payday weekend, at the till — and a backup card in your wallet turns that from crisis to shrug. Bonus: use one account for fixed bills and one for daily spending, and budgeting happens almost by itself.
PrepareSame documents as the first account.
Watch outLetting the unused account go fully dormant — a tiny monthly standing order between your own accounts keeps both alive.
