    Scan everything into one safe place

    Today, photograph or scan every important document — passport pages, visa letters, NI letter, contracts, certificates (with certified translations if you have them) — into one cloud folder with two-factor authentication. When a form asks for a document at 11pm, or a bag is stolen, this folder is the difference between a bad evening and a bad month.

    Prepare

    Your phone camera and a cloud account (Google Drive, iCloud) with 2FA enabled.

    Watch out

    Storing document photos only in your camera roll, unencrypted and mixed with 4,000 other photos — findable by a thief, unfindable by you.

  2. Step 2

    Know what to carry and what to leave home

    Daily wallet: one bank card and, if you drive, your licence. That's it. Your passport lives at home in a fixed spot — the UK has no requirement to carry ID day-to-day, and a lost passport means weeks of consular appointments and real money. Carry a phone photo of it for the rare moment something needs checking.

  3. Step 3

    Build your renewal calendar

    Five documents expire and each expiry hurts: your visa, your passport, your Turkish passport's 6-month validity buffer for travel, your driving licence situation, and any insurance. Put every date in your phone calendar with alerts at 6 months and 3 months. The 6-month alert exists because renewals from the UK (especially Turkish passports via the consulate) can take longer than you think.

    Booking flights home with under 6 months left on your passport — many airlines refuse boarding even when the destination is your own country.

  4. Step 4

    Sort your driving licence situation early

    A Turkish licence lets you drive in Great Britain for a limited period after becoming resident — check the current rules and deadlines on gov.uk, because driving past your window means driving unlicensed, which voids insurance and can end in prosecution. If you'll stay, plan the UK licence process (provisional, theory, practical) months before your window closes; test waiting lists are long.

    Assuming "nobody checks" — the check happens after an accident, exactly when an invalid licence turns a bad day into a catastrophe.

  5. Step 5

    Create your "if I lose everything" card

    One note in your phone (and one on paper at home) with the recovery paths: consulate appointment line for a lost Turkish passport, your bank's freeze-card number, 101 for reporting theft, your UKVI account recovery details, and a trusted person's number. Panic makes people forget even their own bank's name — the card thinks for you when you can't.

    Prepare

    Ten minutes and the phone numbers on the back of your bank cards.

    Watch out

    Writing PINs or full passwords on the same card — recovery info yes, secrets never.
